Building Number Sense Institute

The CSUSB Inland Counties Mathematics Project is sponsoring an institute which will focus on strengthening number sense by exploring the concepts of number and operations while making connections to algorithms, both standard and non-standard, for different types of numbers. To help deepen mathematical knowledge for teaching, participants will investigate topics across grades 2-7 in the Number and Operations, Operations and Algebraic Thinking, and Number System domains from the Common Core State Standards. Participants will also engage in strategies to foster the Standards for Mathematical Practice.

When:
Monday-Thursday, July 18 - July 21, 2016
Time:
8:30AM - 3:30PM
Where:

CSUSB | California State University of San Bernardino

5500 University Parkway San Bernardino, CA 92407

Room: TBD

Math Teachers' Circle Workshop

This workshop will focus on the creative thinking and problem solving skills we aim to instill in our students, as described in the CCSS Standards for Mathematical Practice. Participants will be introduced to games and puzzles related to mathematical ideas which will be solved and analyzed collaboratively through guided questioning. There will be an emphasis on using multiple representations and models to find insightful solutions. We will highlight ways in which these activities help develop the Common Core Standards for Mathematical Practice, and discuss pedagogy that encourages perseverance and creative thinking.

When:
Monday-Thursday, June 27 - June 30, 2016
Time:
8:30AM - 3:30PM
Where:

CSUSB | California State University of San Bernardino

5500 University Parkway San Bernardino, CA 92407

Other Summer Institutes offered by CEME:

(Note: The summer institutes listed below were offered previously and may be offered again in the future. The summer institutes that will be running in June/July 2016 are listed above. )

Mathematical Modeling Institute

The Eight Standards for Mathematical Practice from the new Common Core State Standards offer exciting opportunities for students to learn important math concepts and skills through real-life applications. This institute will give you knowledge and strategies to introduce your students to mathematical modeling while you transition to Common Core.

Standards for Mathematical Practice Institute

To implement the Standards for Math Practice, it is necessary to experience the practice of mathematics. In this institute, teachers will do mathematics as mathematicians, and then reflect on their own work and their thinking processes. Teachers will then consider ways to implement similar activities in their own classrooms in order to develop students' mathematical thinking. We will consider questions such as what conditions are necessary, how can obstacles be overcome, what are realistic goals, and how to adapt the activities to fit into the curriculum?

*This institute is based on the "Developing Mathematical Practices in High School" institute developed by the Education Development Center, Inc. (mpi.edc.org)

Algebra Institute

The Algebra Institute is a 5 day long institute held once a year in the summer. The Algebra Institute is $100.00 and food is provided.

During the Algebra Institute, you will accumulate various materials to use in the secondary classroom as well as various methods in which to solve algebraic problems.  This institute helps teachers view algebra in multiple ways and helps them to better understand the "Why?" when it comes to solving problems.

Refund Policy:

In the event that a participant decides to withdraw from the Institute, the following refund policy will be implemented.

In the event that a participant decides to withdraw from the Summer Institute, a full refund will be issued if cancelled ten (10) or more business days prior to the event. Unfortunately, we will not be able to issue refunds if cancellations occur nine (9) business days or less prior to the institute.
